The film tells the story of three people for a year: a son (Magimel) diagnosed with cancer, a mother (Deneuve) suffering from helplessness and a doctor (Cécile de France) to do her job: One year and four seasons for these three characters to deal with the disease, to tame it, and to understand what it means to die while alive.。影片根据真人真事改编，讲述身患绝症的艾丽莎（维多利亚·普契尼 Vittoria Puccini 饰）为即将出生的女儿安娜准备了18份礼物，却在女儿出生之日遗憾离世。随着安娜的长大，由于自己的生日却是妈妈的忌日，每一年拆礼物成为了她的负担。强大的压力下，安娜（贝内黛塔·波尔卡罗利 Benedetta Porcaroli 饰）在18岁生日当天离家出走，却意外地撞上了怀孕时的妈妈，母女俩开始以一种奇妙的方式认识和相处……。
