本片讲述了70年代一个普通中国孩子聂耳的人之初。在昆明的端仕街的小药铺成春堂里，一位年轻的寡妇带着四个年幼的孩子过着清贫的生活。信儿（聂耳）是其中最不安分的孩子，为了支持信儿上学，母亲准备卖掉家里的八音钟，信儿哭喊着不让；信儿作弄了学堂里经常欺负其他孩子的雀儿而被先生训骂；信儿的好友屈儿走了，伤心的信儿大病一场；母亲病重，信儿将八音钟拿去买了给母亲卖药；信儿为了病重的母亲决定上学费便宜的学校。。迫切希望三个儿子结婚的母亲承诺：谁第一个结婚，就把房子给谁。于是，一场结婚竞赛随即展开。。When Joan’s husband dies, she is shocked to discover he had invented an elixir which makes the drinker look young again. Sharing it with her two friends, the three women paint the town red but soon discover that they are no longer equipped to be young in the modern world.。
