Who said time heals all wounds? 源自：h...。三十年代，旧上海。顾曼桢（林心如 饰）优雅娴静，在家里照顾母亲，在外独立工作，与同事沈世钧（谭耀文 饰）的爱情刚刚萌芽。曼桢有个姐姐曼璐（蒋勤勤 饰），17岁就出来做了舞女以养活家人，后又忍痛放弃自己的初恋嫁给有财有势能让家里过上富足生活的祝鸿才，祝鸿才并不是一个安生的主儿，婚后依然花天酒地。曼璐年华老去红颜不再，心态也变得古怪。
曼桢和世钧的恋爱开展得并不顺利，虽然彼此确定心意，却遭到世钧母亲的反对，她更希望儿子与南京的名媛翠芝结合。但她不知道翠芝其实心头另有所爱。曼桢和世钧之间苦难重重，加上试探不断，二人之间误会渐生。
这边曼璐为了留住丈夫的心，想出了一个恶毒的法子，不惜赔上妹妹的终身幸福。。
